Posted on Tue, 17 Oct 2017
Question: Past 1 month before i got hurt at the left upper portion of occipital bone of my skull. Today morning also i got hurt but this time on right side of my brain.
After getting hurt on the left side for the past one month i am facing pain in my left lower end on neck . And from today the same again started but on the right lower end.
Now are there any nerves that may be connected becoz of which I am getting pain ?
Is there any need to worry for the same...like chances or risk of having meningitis.
Also , before 3 years I have done 4 CT scans ....3 for my brain and other for some other reason.
I fear if this time also I do will CT scan pose any future threat of cancer to me as i am young .
Please respond what will be the best action for me.
Also a strange thing both these time i got hurt i was under alprazolam ....so exactly i am not able to fathom the intensity of my pain.
This sunday i will have to take 3 flights ...will that be safe too??
Please respond and presently what medicines should i take.

Brief Answer:
Please check for any concerning symptoms listed

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing in to us.

You might have had a trivial head injury, not some thing serious.

A head injury is of concern if there are any of the following in the first 24 hours.

Severe headache which is worsening
Inability to speak
Difficulty in balancing and walking
Vomiting
Visual problems
Seizures
Loss of higher mental functions and alertness

If you do not have any of the above then there is no need to get any detailed test done.

A CT scan is needed only if you have signs of serious head injury including any of the symptoms in the list above.

I do not know the reason you are taking alprazolam, please take it only if prescribed by your doctors.

For the pain you can take paracetamol 500 mg one tablet after food and the pain should decrease.

If you do not have any worsening symptoms then a serious head injury is unlikely and you can take flights on sunday for travelling.

Hi sir,
Thanks for your valuable suggestions.
If by chance a a CT may be needed for me then cab you please confirm me that are there any harmful side effects of this radiation. Already , I have 4 CTs out of which 3 was in brain only. Do it possess risks for any cancerous cells to develop in the body. Also are there any medicine or process available to reduce the effects of radiation.

Brief Answer:
Additional risk of cancer from 3 CT brain scans is 0.06 percent

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

There is a calculated risk of adverse effect due to radiation. After 3 CT brain scans the dose of radiation involved is 6 msV and the risk of getting a cancer is 0.06 percent. I have not counted the other CT scan.

You have been exposed to small amount of radiation however there is 99.94 percent chance that you are safe will not be affected due to the radiation.

You can get a MRI scan brain done for any neurological symptoms which you might have. This does not involve radiation.

Wish you good health

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

If your pain increases then a CT can always be done. I will always be there to reply to any queries which you might have. Please mention my name "Dr.Vivek Chail, Radiologist" in the query and it will come directly to me.

Neurobion forte is a vitamin and can be taken with paracetamol. However please remember to take paracetamol only when requires and after food. Please take 6 to 8 hours apart and stop taking once your pain is less. Taking paracetamol regularly can cause stomach and kidney problems.

Wish you happy journey and good stay.
