Posted on Fri, 23 Jan 2015
Question: I have previously had diverticulitis. We are away from home so when I was constipated for a couple of days and started getting pains I called my doc who prescribed two antibiotics until we get home. However the last two days I have been experiencing severe pain near my left hip but mostly when I move around or take a deep breath. Should I go to ER?

Brief Answer:
Yes go to ER

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.

Diverticulitis pain usually occurs near the left hip.
With the history of constipation and diverticulitis it is very much likely that the current episode of pain may also be due to diverticulitis.
Milder attacks usually respond to oral antibiotics. But for severe form you may need hospitalization, confirmation of the diagnosis with a CT scan and for intravenous antibiotics.
Since you are not finding relief with the oral antibiotics and that the pain is severe I would advise you to go to ER for confirmation of the diagnosis and further management.

I hope that answers your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr.R.K.

I went to a walk in clinic and the doc told me I had to give the meds time to work. And to return is I had a fever or increased pain. I am taking Flagyl 3x a day 250mg and Levoquin 1x a day 500mg. I felt better on Sat but today I feel nauseous and tired. Could this be from the meds? I have not had much of an appetite so I have not eaten much. Yesterday I had diarrhea but today I have gone very little. Should I take a laxative? I may sound a bit hyper about this but last spring the diverticulitis caused a double kidney infection and I was in hospital for 5 days. Don't want a repeat. Thank you
