What Causes Pain In Breast With Normal MRI And CAT Scan?

Question: Enlarged breast with pain. Post- menopausal. MRI shows no cancer. CAT scan clear. Mammograms are negative as well.
Only one breast.
Bra size increased two sizes in 4 months.
Swells more after use of left arm, sweeping, mopping, etc.

1. Yes there is pain. Dull pain. The pain increases as it swells.
2. No skin color change.
3. No change when lying down.
4. No nipple discharge. No rashes.
5. No trauma to left hand or arm.
6. Not feverish.

Thanks for getting back with the details..

From the history you have given me it looks like you have lymphedema. It usually occurs due to a block in the lymphatic system.
Here is how you should go about it

1. Get a doppler scan of the upper limb and vein of the neck to rule out venous thrombosus. This causes single sided swelling
2. If it is normal I would want you to get a lymphangiogram done, this will show us where exactly the block is
3. If that is normal as well, the next step is to see for any hidden tumour of the breast by undergoing a PET scan.

Whatever maybe the cause the treatment is till the same. You will have to apply upper limb tight stockings. This will reduce the edema and swelling.

The best doctor to approach would be a general surgeon and a vascular surgeon.
