Brief Answer:
Muscle sprain and spasms

Detailed Answer:
I am sorry to hear that your husband has sprained his back after a fall. This fall has caused muscle strain and spasms of the muscles in his back.

For immediate pain control is resting the area. some people use ice and come use heat. I usually recommend the ice as it will help numb the muscle and reduce the spasms. I also recommend while laying that he put pillows under his knees to help keep the back in a neutral position.

In addition adding both Tylenol and ibuprofen may be used to help reduce pain. I recommend alternating the dose of ibuprofen with Tylenol every 3 hours which will keep some form of pain medication in his system through the night.

Tomorrow I recommend he either see his doctor or see a massage therapist

In summary
1. Sprain/spasms back
2. Rest laying flat with knees bent with pillows to place back in neutral position
3. Use either ice or heat. I prefer using ice to numb the muscles
4. Alternate Tylenol and ibuprofen
5. See physician or massage therapy
