What Causes Numbness In The Right Knee?

default
Posted on Wed, 3 May 2017
Question: I have had numbness on the lateral side of my right knee. From mid knee to upper tibia. No swelling. It is new and has been quite noticeable for about 6 weeks. Not painful but so noticeable that it's concerning. I'm active. 53. 120 lb female. On my feet all the time. Only health hx is HTN Actually an ICU nurse so my head goes to worse case scenario. Started a new job so no health insurance at the moment. Will have insurance in XXXXXXX and will pursue then but it's bothersome enough and the odd sensation of numbness is enough that I rarely stop noticing it. Any thoughts?

Brief Answer:
It could be fibromyalgia due to over exertion on your muscle or joints .

Detailed Answer:
Hi i am Dr Ahmed Aly
thanks for using HealthcareMagic site ,
I had gone through your question and understand your concerns ..

In my opinion that could be a type of neuropathy if as you mentioned no swelling or pain . from your given history you are an ICU nurse , so if it is not rheumatoid arthritis or diabetic neuropathy it could be fibromyalgia and thus pressing on your nerves .
In some cases it could be fatigue due to long stands ( you also mentioned that you on feet all time ) and HTN , this allows more blood stasis in your lower limb and thus more venous deoxygenated blood in your legs and thus low oxygen for your muscles and nerves performing this numbness sensation .
In some rare cases it is a sign of vasculitis so i recommend Doppler U/S to exclude any vascular diseases or possible minor DVT .
When ever you feel such numbness you may apply RICE ( Resting or relaxing , Icing it , Compression bandaging , Elevation ) as a temporary relief sensation .
For my patient i may recommend painkillers ( NSAIDs ) like advil tabs when needed , gentle massaging with topical anti-inflammatory gels , muscle relaxants , B12 vitamin supplements and gabapentin will be effective in most of cases .
If pain persist i recommend further investigations and follow them with me or your physician for proper evaluation and management .
