What Causes Moles With Dark Centers On Back?

default
Posted on Tue, 18 Aug 2015
Question: I have two moles on my back with dark centres- one has always had one and the other the dark spot has recently come to.

I have had these spots for two years. My derm said they are just maturing but they freak me out I am terrified of melanoma- he said he doesnt want to remove them because it would leave an unnecessary scar. I just want a second opinion to give me some relief. If you could review the photos that would be great- thanks.

Brief Answer:
One of this moles should be removed

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

Thank you for the query.

Generally moles which do change size, color, shape, start itching, should be removed and tested. No doubt in that. This is known rule. If something new has appeared in one of this moles, it has to be removed. Scar is not high price for the healthy.
Aditoinally dermatologist should check all your moles with dermatoscope. Without this tool, it is impossible to tell which moles are suspicious.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further question.

Regards.

my dermatologist did check the moles with a dermascope and said that there is no need for worry and that the pigment change is just due to sun exposure- he said he does not want to remove them because he is certain that they are benign.

Should i still insist he moved them? or is it okay because he has viewed them with a dermascope?

Brief Answer:
Still this mole should be removed and tested.

Detailed Answer:
Melanoma risk factor is mole sun exposure. So the explanation that this pigment change is due to sun exposure is right and there is nothing to be worried is false. The rules are known. Any pigmentation change is the indication to remove the mole. Please see this simple guide:
http://www.melanomafoundation.org/prevention/abcd.htm

For 99% your mole is benign. But as there is a change of color in it, should be removed and tested.
