What Causes Milky Discharge Through The Nipple?

default
Posted on Fri, 17 Apr 2015
Question: Yes, I am a healthy 35 year old. I have some concern about my right breast. I can squeeze white cream out of it. My left breast will not do it. I have been able to do this for about a year and a half. Not sure I should worry about it if it has been happening for so long. Wish I could clear up the question though. Sometimes the breast sends some pain. I cant find any lumps that seem abnormal. Slight indentation in the nipple. Thanks, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Nipple discharge is more likely to be normal but should be checked.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

There are several conditions that can cause milky discharge (which is also called galactorrhea):

1. medications like antidepressants, opiates, medicines which reduce the amount of acid made by your stomach,

2. herbal supplements.

3. oral contraception,

4. kidney or thyroid disease,

5. benign tumor of the pituitary gland which is responsible for producing prolactin.

Please note that galacorrhea is not a disease but it could be a sign of some problem. Also sometimes the cause of milky discharge is unknown.

I suggest you to make a blood test to check the level of prolactin (which stimulates milk production).

You have also asked about breast pain which is one of the most common breast problems. Women usually feel increased breast pain before their menstrual period. Pain may also be caused by cysts.

I would order ultrasound of the breast to find the reason of your symptoms.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
