What Causes Low Body Temprature?

default
Posted on Thu, 3 Jul 2014
Question: I have low body temperature... even immediately after exercise. My typical temp after being up for a couple hours, busy with kids, is 96.6. I tried cardio for 30 minutes, took my temp again, and it actually dropped to 95.7. I'm 46 yrs old, and probably about 20- 25 lbs over weight (5'4", 155 lbs). I have been trying to lose weight for a couple of years now, with no good results. Is my low body temp. part of the problem? Is there any way to raise it? Exercise doesn't seem to do it.

Hi and welcome to HCM

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the query. This is still not worrying since 96.6 is lower than usual valuse but this is not indicating serious condition. Body temps lower than 95.2 F are considered to be pathologic and require medical attention.
However, if you are worried about this, you should rule out most common causes of low body temp and these are: low thyroid hormones, diabetes, rheumatoid diseases, other homronal imbalance, liver failure and certain drugs which you didnt mention in your medications. So I suggest first to check thyroid horm. and cortisole levels and blood sugar. After it check your rheumatoid factor as your symptoms may indicate raynaouds syndrome in some cases. All in all, continue with exercise and change your dietary habits and everything will be fine. WIsh you good health. Regards

Thank you for your feed back. I recently had blood work done... everything was normal. I don't feel unwell. My question is whether my consistent low temp is making it very difficult to lose weight, and if you, as a medical professional, are able to recommend a way to raise my body temp. Exercise doesn't raiae my temp, it further cools me, instead.... isnt that counter intuitive? I simply want to burn calories. Im sure obesity will cause me to become ill, and im working at avoiding that. Thank you. My temp is typically 96.6 before workout; immediately after work out, it drops to 95.7...seems backwards.

hi

Detailed Answer:
First, there is no need to raise your body temperature at this point. Low body temperature cant be cause of inability to lose weight, it can only be indicative sign that something is wrong with your metabolism. In most cases this is thyroid issue, but many other can be considered. Also, it is hard to determine are you losing more calories than you intake. YOu should measure every calorie that you take and lose, and then see will you lose weight. Body temp after exercise depends on environment factors too, hear beat, degree of sweating, fluid intake etc.
Certain energy drinks and similar porducts can speed up metabolism, but this will not facilitate weight loss. You simply need to find balance between calories intake and loss and check your homronal levels.

I appreciate your reply. I have tried keeping very close tabs on my calorie intake, as well as calories burned, according to exercise machines and estimations based on type of workout and time done during each workout. I'm stumped. And based on the information you've given, it seems that you are stumped, too. Thanks for your time.

hi

Detailed Answer:
as i said.metabolism can be more or less fast, but it is impossible that you dont lose weight if you burn more calories than you take. There is no possibility of raising body temperature to achieve weight lose, there is no such method and this is not medically justified.
