Question: my 7 year old nephew has asthma and takes steroids, inhalers are used. he has a history of food allergies. Recently he has had several behavioral outbursts. From instantly becoming angry, to screaming and crying for no reason. His behaviors are now affecting his grades, and his teachers are having a negative view of my nephew. His father has been deployed to Afghanistan for the past 8 months. He has cousin with diabetes who was diagnosed at age 8 or 9. Just trying to cover all the basis....what could be the problem and how do we as a family try to help him? I believe medical angles should be investigated first,,,,what is your opinion?

Brief Answer: May be normal changes, check for inhaler use, metabolic disorder Detailed Answer: Hi, thanks for writing to HCM. I went through your query and understood your concerns. Child getting irritable and crying do seen in normal kid, they try getting their wish fulfilled by making those stuffs. Effort from family members to change him, do help to solve his problem. The child should feel secured and confident with him. Spend some quality time with your child, teach him about good behaviors and also reward for that. Keep him engaged in learning new things like swimming, skating, dance, music etc. These are the primary things that will help your child. Since he is on steroid inhaler, kindly check whether he is using it properly and the effectiveness of it. Even ill health due to improper treatment due to less dose or improper use may cause him to behave as explained by you. There are few metabolic disorder which are associated with mental changes, mild mental retardation and also late-onset behavioral or personality changes. This includes most commonly variation in blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia and nonketotic hyperglycinaemia) and other relatively rare conditions like homocystinurias, monoamine oxidase A deficiency etc.. In these conditions specific treatment do help in reducing mental changes and damage to brain. Metabolic disorders are rare conditions, better to get examined and evaluated based on your doctor's advice after examining him. Hope this information helpful to you. Feel free to ask further related query and I will be glad to answer them. Wish you and your family a very good health. Regards
