Posted on Mon, 13 Apr 2015
Question: My sister is 60 years old and a uterine biopsy determined proliferative cells and a second deeper biopsy is being performed. A CT scan shows thickening of uterine wall. Is there anything besides cancer that can be the cause of these findings?

Brief Answer:
may be hyperplasia or cancer

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Thickening of the endometrium can be due to endometrial cancer or endometrial hyperplasia.
Endometrial hyperplasia refers to abnormal proliferation of the endometrium. It can potentially become cancerous .

It is possible that the changes are not related to cancer at the moment but to endometrial hyperplasia

There are different types of endometrial hyperplasia but the risk of becoming cancerous depends on the type found on biopsy.

The types are: (1)simple hyperplasia- a 1% risk of becoming cancerous
(2)complex hyperplasia- a 3-5% risk
(3)simple atypia (abnormal appearance)-a 8-10% risk
(4)complex atypia - 25% -30% risk

The biopsy will be able to determine if the changes are related to cancer or hyperplasia.
If it is hyperplasia then the type would be determined. If there is no atypia then hormonal treatment would be started, if atypia is present then a hysterctomy would likely be recommended to prevent progression to cancer.
