What Causes Hoarse Voice After Treating Ear Infection With Amoxicillin?

default
Posted on Fri, 5 Jun 2015
Question: Hello! My son XXXXXXX is 3 1/2. He has has a hoarse voice and no other symptoms for about 5 days now. He was on Amoxicillan 2 weeks ago for an ear infection. and hasn't been on any meds since then. He had a confirmed case of thrush last year, and a possible case in November. There are currently no white spots in his mouth or tonsils, just the hoarse voice. Could this be allergies or another case of thrush? If there is no white in his mouth that I can see, is it unlikely that it would be thrush? Thank you!

Brief Answer:
He is mostly having URTI.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
In my opinion, he is mostly having upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) in the form of laryngitis.
Since he had ear infection 2 weeks ago, possibility of recurrence is high.
Hoarseness of voice is related to laryngitis.
And viral infection is the most common cause for laryngitis.
Possibility of allergy is less likely as it shows symptoms like cough, sneezing etc first. Hoarseness is less likely seen in allergy.
Oral thrush is also less likely as his oral cavity is not having thrush.
So better to consult ENT doctor and get done clinical examination of vocal cords and larynx to rule out laryngitis.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wishing good health to your son.
Thanks.

Thank you! I will see how he does the next few days and call the doctor then. He is eating and drinking normally with a good energy level so he doesn't appear sick. Thanks again!

Brief Answer:
Ask him to do warm water gargles 5-6 times a day.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on HCM.
Since, he is eating and drinking well with good energy level, no need to worry much for hoarseness of voice.
It is mostly viral infection and will gradually subside by its own.
You can ask him to do warm water gargles 5-6 times a day for better improvement in hoarseness.
Hope I have solved your query.
