What Causes High Fever And Rib Cage Pain In A Child?
My 5 and a half year old daughter is having following symptoms:
1. High fever during evenings - second night with fever. Fever went up till 104.
2. Complaining of pain under the rib cage (right side). Can see a bit of swelling there. Very minor one.
2. Meftal did not bring the fever down the first night.
3. Normal water strips and paracetamol on forehead helped being down the fever on second night to 102 degree celsius from 104. Fever remains at about 102 now.
4. Not sure if Paracetamol was able to bring down the fever as it was given along with water strips applied on forehead.
I am worried about the complain on rib cage pain. No other swelling or rashes on the body.
Hoping some of you can help here a bit.
Needs evaluation by chest X ray and blood investigation
Detailed Answer:
Hi
I understand your concerns but don't worry. The likely reason for these symptoms can be pneumonia with associated pleuritis, costochondritis or abscess.
To come to a definitive diagnosis, I would recommend you to get a few investigations done. This includes Chest X Ray along with CBC and peripheral smear examination. You may upload the reports for my reference.
You may start her on an antibiotic such as Cefixime along with antipyretics which you are already giving. Cold sponging has an added advantage over paracetamol, so continue it.
Hopefully she will be fine. I will advise you the further plan of management after the reports come.
Take care
