What Causes Herpes, Recurrent Cold Sore On Lip And Swollen Lymph Gland?

Question: During my last gynecological visit (over a year ago) I asked for an STD test. It came back clean. However, my doctor told me I had been exposed to Herpes. She did not say I was being diagnosed positive for Herpes, nor was I negative. She didn't say which type, either. I was very confused by what this diagnosis meant- however, I have never experienced any genital outbreaks or any other symptoms since so I forgot about. About once a year I would get a cold sore on my lower lip when I had the flu/cold, however that had been happening since I was a kid (I am now 25), so I didn't think anything of it. But just a few days ago, my boyfriend found a single blister on the shaft of his penis, had body aches/flu like symptoms, as well as a small, swollen lymph gland on his pelvis. We don't use condoms, as we've been together for over a year, and are monogamous. My immediate fear was perhaps I was misdiagnosed by previous OBGYN, and perhaps I am a dormant carrier of Herpes. I've made an appointment for an STD test this upcoming week, but I am very worried that I could have unknowingly given my boyfriend an STD. It does not look like the usual cluster of blisters associated with Herpes, but a single blister, and within a day it has formed into a scab. I read that Herpes blisters are small clusters, that take weeks to scab over? He says it is not painful, just sensitive when touched. His body aches and mild headache only lasted two days, we are on the third day and he merely feels tired. Should we be worried about Herpes infection? Is it possible this is just a friction blister from sex (we had very rough sex two nights in a row before the blister formed) because of his very dry skin?

Brief Answer:
get testing to be sure

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for your question.
You could both be tested to make sure. Genital tests are not accurate unless the fluid from the blister is tested, but blood tests are available for both HSV1 (oral) ad HSV2 (genital) types of herpes.
However, what he has does not sound like a herpes outbreak. Usually with the first outbreak of HSV2 there are a lot of blisters and they are very painful. In fact the pain can come even before the blisters. One blister that is not terribly painful does not sound like herpes.
You can be tested to make sure but this does not sound like herpes
