What Causes Hemorrhoid After Acute Diarrhea?

default
Posted on Mon, 20 Oct 2014
Question: I recently had a bad stomach bug that lasted 4-5 days with frequent diarrhea. On about day 5, I got a hard knot under the skin right outside the opening of my anus on the perineum. Its painful and its really painful to sit down. Is it something that could be a side effect from the constant diarrhea? I never had to strain, like with constipation, so I was thinking I didnt "pop" or strain something.

Brief Answer:
Hemorrhoids

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for contacting HCM with your medical question.

I am sorry to hear that you have had diarrhea for the past 5 days. The diarrhea by itself can cause excessive irritation to the anal area and rectum and cause a hemorrhoid to surface. In my practice I would have a patient use sitz baths to help sooth the area and use procto foam or preparation H. It may take several days to get the area to settle down. If the area is too painful I have sent patients to rectal surgeons to remove the hemorrhoid.

Your other concern is the diarrhea. This has been going on too long and may continue to irritate the hemorrhoid. I would recommend you stop taking any milk or milk products. You may have a mild milk intolerance and drinking milk will potentiate your diarrhea. Also to slow down the stools I would add imodium and take it after each loose BM with a mas of 6 pills per day. If this does not stop your diarrhea then you may have an bacterial infection and need additional testing. At that time I recommend you seek medical attention.

Hope this answers your question. Please contact us again for any of your medical questions.

I just went to the restroom and noticed light brown colored blood had leaked out and was on my legs right out side my anus. It had a bad odor to it. Is it possible that the hemorrhoids had ruptured? Is this normal or should I go to the ER?

Brief Answer:
Bleeding from hemmohoid

Detailed Answer:
yes it is entirely possible that the hemmorrhoid has ruptured. this may have reduced the pain and swelling. if the bleeding has stopped then there is no reason to visit the ER. To aid healing for the ruptured hemorroid i still recommend Sitz baths and keeping your anus as clean XXXXXXX possible. Sometimes i recommend tucks pads but that will cause significant burning. The tucks pads help keep the area clean and allow for better healing.

Good Luck. Please contact me if you have any developments or questions.
