Question: What causes a person to feel like their heart is beating very hard? Not necessarily fast, though sometimes fast, but sometimes just very hard. I often feel my heartbeat, especially at night.

Brief Answer:
This is Palpitation caused by various reasons.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM

I have gone through your query. The problem you experience is most likely Palpitation. This can occur due to various reasons. Hypothyroidism , anxiety , anemia , high blood pressure etc. It is better to have a ECG to rule out cardiac problems to be on safe side. Blood pressure should be measured also.
Get a blood routine to rule out anemia and thyroid profile to rule out hypothyroidism. In case of anemia taking iron b12 and folic acid supplements help. In case of hypothyroidism supplementation of thyroxine will normalize palpitation.
If all these are clear then it can be due to anxiety or stress. In such case you can practice breathing exercise. Sit relaxed and take deep breaths. Do this a couple of times daily. If that is not helping then you can go for counseling with psychologist. If that is also not helping then a short course anxiolytics will be helpful.

Let me know if anything not clear.
I am happy to help you.
Thanks.

Does the time of day that it occurs (usually always at night before bed) indicate anything specific? I dont recall it ever happening during the day.

Brief Answer:
Anxiety is more specific for that.

Welcome again.

Thank you for your follow up.

Anxiety is more specific which appears at night time. Any how better to rule out others. If those things are clear then it can be most likely from anxiety.
