What Causes Hardness Around Navel?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Apr 2015
Question: my 95 year old mother has a hardness around about half her navel. It comes and goes. She had a checkup--blood work, urine test about a month ago. The urine was negative for bacteria. She was quite low for iron. She takes Geritol and a multi-vitamin with iron and appeared to have more energy. However, the last few days, she has been napping much of the day and waking several times a night to urinate. We are not sure if the bulge is related to the excessive sleeping, or if she picked up an infection. She doesn't feel feverish herswlf or to the touch, but her temp. was 101 falling to 98.6 yesterday, but 101 again this afternoon. Is appendicitis indicated?

Brief Answer:
Unlikely to be appendicitis

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome and thanks for your query.
Appreciate your concern for your mother.
She has an infection which is the cause of her fever. Any infection at her age can make her very weak and tired.
The symptoms are not suggestive of appendicitis. There may be a peri umbilical cellulitis.
They are more suggestive of a urinary infection which she is prone for. Please repeat the urine microscopy, blood count, kidney function and blood sugar.
I shall be happy to interpret the results.
Hope she would get well soon .
