What Causes Hard Bump On Upper Left Gum Area And Painful Upper Teeth?

Posted on Sat, 7 Jun 2014
Question: hello doctor, about 2 months ago I started developing pain in my upper left teeth, at first the pain wasn't too bad but as the days went by it became increasingly worse and would throb. after awhile the pain became unbearable as to were I couldn't even chew on the left side of my mouth, so I went in to the dentist who took xrays but couldn't really pinpoint the source of the pain, but he said it had to be some kind of infection or inflammation so he prescribed me some antibiotics which worked great and the pain hasn't returned since. but shortly after that I noticed a small hard bump on the area that the pain was radiating from upper left just above the gum and cheek area and its about the size of a bb, it doesn't hurt and I can kinda move it alittle. but it has me concerned and I was wondering if this little bump might of had something to do with the great pain I was experiencing just over a month ago? thank you.

Brief Answer:
Periapical or Periodontal Abscess

Detailed Answer:
Hello, XXXXXX ,

This is Dr. Priyanka tiwari answering your query,

I have gone through your query and understand your concern. Since you have history of pain in tooth, this swelling can be related to your toothache. I think it can due to carious tooth or due to Periodontal Pocket formation ( deposition of food debris) in gums.

In my opinion, you need to get back to your dentist and discuss about the aforementioned condition. Root canal treatment is entailed if presence of dental infection is confirmed. Scaling and Curettage would be the treatment if it isn't from infection.

Without an opportunity to physically examine you, I am unable to specify the right treatment. You can get back to me if needed after the dental evaluation.

Hope I have answered your query ,

If you have further query I will be happy to help.

ok thank u doctor another question if I may, like I said the cyst or pocket hasn't caused me any pain since I took the antibiotics, is it possible that the cyst can go dorment and suddenly flareup? im afraid of the pain returning and have been taking better care of my teeth. also forgot to mention I cant see the cyst in the mirror but I can feel it pertruding slightly out of the skin above my gum line when I rub mu finger along it, is that very common with these type of cysts?

Brief Answer:
need evaluation

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXX,

Cyst formation can recur after initial treatment. However whether or not it is a cyst, a pocket formation or a boil can be confirmed only with examination. I sometimes order for OPG to arrive at this diagnosis.

In all probabilities, I don't think you have a serious concern here. But it is definitely worth while to get back to your treating doctor. He/she can examine the affected area before ordering for OPG X-ray. We can get this sorted once we have the diagnosis.

Hope it will help you.
