What Causes Green Stool And UTI In Child?

default
Posted on Thu, 17 Dec 2015
Question: my 8yo daughter has a diagnosed uti. she has been sick almost a month and we finally went and got it diagnosed and are about to start Cefuroxime. the past few days her stool (not diarrhea) has been very green (not due to anything in diet). my doctor was not concerned about it given the positive uti result, and recommends we start the antibiotic. while I understand the urgency of abx for a persistent uti, I am concerned about possible harm it could do to the digestive tract given this new symptom. could the green stool somehow be related to the uti?

Brief Answer:
Antibiotics are unlikely to be the cause.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Urinary tract infection is common in children. It is assuring to know that the cause underlying her long standing illness has been identified and is being managed properly. Completion of the course of antibiotics should resolve the problem. Although the antibiotics can simultaneously kill off the beneficial bacteria that are present in our intestines and thereby may cause some diarrhea, antibiotics still need to be given for the full duration. Greenish stools occur due to rapid transit of the stool through the large intestine where it does not get adequate time for the bile pigments to be converted to the yellow coloured pigment of stool. You need not worry about it. The antibiotics are unlikely to cause this.

Thank you for the response. To clarify, we have not yet started the antibiotics. Wondering if the green stool could be part of the uti symptoms.

Brief Answer:
Does not seem to be due to UTI

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.
The green stool does not seem to be related to the UTI and does not seem to be a part of the UTI symptoms.
You should start the antibiotics at the earliest. Also give plenty of water and fluids to drink.
