Posted on Mon, 22 Dec 2014
Question: My son is 4 yrs 5 months old and he is going for toilet (urine) every 20 - 30 minutes since 2 months. He just goes to bathroom for urine but did not get the urine. He sleeps well in the night and this is not case during night. His school teacher also complained that he is going for toilet at least 2 times in an hour. Is this a serious issue or just a psychological problem? Please suggest us on this

Brief Answer:
Mostly urinary infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
Usually the recommended workup for frequent urination in a child of 4 to 5 years is to do urine routine and culture examination.
1. It is common to get urinary tract infection at this age.

2. Other possibilities include local infection in the penis like balanoposthitis where the foreskin cannot be retracted easily. This can cause frequent urination and has to be confirmed by a medical examination. Your doctor should be able to identify if the urethral opening is infected or not.

3. Worm infestation can cause frequent urination due to itching. Try Deworming once in six months with albendazole

Don't worry. If all these are normal then it could be due to the weather too. But encourage him to drink enough liquids guided by his thirst and avoid sweetened and carbonated beverages.

Wishing your child good health.
