What Causes Fluctuations In BP While Detoxifying Alcohol From System?

default
Posted on Wed, 6 Jan 2016
Question: I am self-detoxing from alcohol abuse. I've not had alcohol for over 50 hours. I have a pulse oximeter to check my vitals. My BP is 141/96 Pulse is 72. I am female, age 25, weight 125 lb. I am staying hydrated drinking about 6 oz water every 3 hours. Eating small amount of food.

Why are my BP indicators so widely spread? My lower number is going down. My higher number is staying high? Can you give me some ideas about how to correct this?

Brief Answer:
Please get medical help for detoxification

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for your question.

Detoxing from alcohol without medical help can be dangerous and I cannot encourage it. I recommend you visit an emergency room given your blood pressure readings. Let me explain why this is my recommendation.

First, detoxing from alcohol can lead to hallucinations, delirium, seizures, and death, unless you are carefully monitored in a medical setting. Second, your blood pressure is high, particularly your diastolic blood pressure, which is the more dangerous number, as high diastolic pressure is correlated with stroke risk. Third, you need medications to prevent progression of withdrawal and to normalize your vitals, and you do not have access to this medication, nor to the IV form which may be needed.

You need to visit an ER immediately.
