I am a Gastroenterologist and would be addressing your query.
As per your query alcohol abuse is one of the most common cause of white liver.Alcohol is hepatotoxic and causes inflammation in liver cells which leads to deposition of excessive fat on liver termed as white liver.This is a layman's term and is not used commonly.

In non alcoholic person cause can be obesity,hyperlipidemia(deranged lipids with high levels of fats in the blood),diabetes or genetic inheritance.

Tests suggested are-
Fasting lipid profile
Random blood sugar
Body mass index
