What Causes Elevated Urine Albumin Level?

default
Posted on Mon, 4 May 2015
Question: Hi. I'm a little confused as to what the normal ranges for albumin are. I had one excellent doctor say normal was 0 - 80 mg/l. On the internet I've read that normal is below 20 mg/l and below 30 mg/l on a spot urine test. I have 47 mg/l urine albumin. Is this high?

Brief Answer:
Depends upon the test method you used and lab norms.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM.

I have gone through your query. Urine albumin normal level depends upon the test method used and lab norms. Different labs can have different norms according to the method they used. Usually they mention the normal range in the results.

If you are testing 24 hour urine collection when you are at rest the normal range is below 80mg/l.
If you are active and testing 24 hour urine then normal range is 150mg.
If you are testing 10 hour overnight collection the normal range is below 20mg/l.
If it is one time collection then normal range is 2mg/l.

Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.

Hi, that's a big help. Is the one time collection normal range below 2 mg/l. What does my spot collection of 47 mg/l mean? Thank you!
My albumin level is now 78 mg/l.

Brief Answer:
In that case it is high.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for your follow up query.

In that case the result is high. So you should run other kidney function tests to rule out kidney problems. You have to run urea and creatinine in blood. A consultation with a nephrologist is well appreciated also.

Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.
