What Causes Dry Throat?

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Oct 2014
Question: After contracting oral thrush following a course of antibiotics for a sinus infection, my doctor gave me an oral liquid dose of Nystatin two weeks ago. After a few days, that dried my mouth out badly, so they switched me to a oral pill of flucanazole 150mg. I am supposed to take a second flucanazole pill a week later as well. I had recently started on a course of bisoprolol 5/6.5 for high blood pressure. That has been causing a lot of urination for me. My biggest complaint is that since taking these medications, I am experiencing a very dry mouth and have had nose bleeds as a result of dry sinuses. Is this something that can be caused by these medications together? Is there something else I should do?

Brief Answer:
Its due to fluconazole

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

Your symptoms of dry throat are most probably being caused by fluconazole. Bisoprolol may also be contributing by causing increased urination. Fluconazole is an antifungal medicine and it can cause alteration of normal flora on mucous membranes. Antibiotics also alter normal flora. By now your flora is altered and you may get recurrent infections of throat and git.

I would suggest that you do not take any more antifungal medicines including nystatin and fluconazole. Having thrush is not a big issue and I have not seen anyone who does not have it nowadays. Antibiotics and stress are the usual culprits.

Drink cleanest water to avoid getting recurrent infections. Take more of fruits and exercise daily for atleast 20 min to improve your immunity. Drink gatorade or ORS to prevent dehydration. You should drink it after every urination. With these measures the issue of dry mouth should resolve.

Hope it helps
