What Causes Dry And Cracking Skin On The Fingers?

default
Posted on Fri, 1 Jul 2016
Question: My fingers are getting dry and cracked and my fingernails may have a fungus (separation from nail beds). I recently got a pet pig. Can it be from him or excessively washing and sanitizing my hands?

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Yes, based on your history , it appears to be related to contact dermatitis. This can be related to the pet or the excessive washing and sanitizing , both.

Moisturizers, topical antibiotics and corticosteroids with anti histamines would be required for treatment in consultation with your doctor. If there is any super added infection then an oral course of antibiotics can be advised subsequently. The area should be kept dry by using kaolin or zinc oxide topical powder.

For the fungal infection, fungal culture can be advised but it can be treated on clinical suspicion with terbinafine.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
