What Causes Discomfort In The Lower Abdominal Area?

default
Posted on Fri, 8 Jul 2016
Question: Hello,

I have some discomfort in my lower abdomen. The first time I felt this was a couple weeks ago after a day of heavy weight lifting . My lower abdomen is puffier than normal and it feels very uncomfortable to lie on my stomach or apply pressure to the area. It sort of feels like there is a large, hard ball near my pubic bone. I am a female of 34 years and have had two cesareans, if that matters.... I saw a doctor about this and he checked my urine and prescribed antibiotics for a UTI because my numbers were slightly off from normal (but only slightly). I am hesitant to take the antibiotics because I have no other UTI symptoms (it does not burn to pee) and I don't like to take antibiotics unless absolutely necessary. Also, a UTI wouldn't explain the hard bulge I feel in my abdomen. I can't help feel that this was somehow exercise-induced. Just wanted to get thoughts from another doc!

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

The bulge feeling or presence of a lump signifies the presence of a possible hernia. An ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis would be required after a proper physical examination to determine the presence of a hernia accordingly. If there is a mass with no associated symptoms then excision should be planned for tissue based diagnosis.

If there are significant number of pus cells in the urine with lab evidence of infection then antibiotics should be taken.

The pain can be musculoskeletal and empirical treatment with NSAIDs and muscle relaxants would be the option to see for empiric improvement.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
