What Causes Difficulty In Swallowing When Diagnosed With Tonsil And Adenoid?

Posted on Tue, 19 Apr 2016
Question: My 9 month old son has been having great difficulty eating his solids. We noticed from the age of 6 months that he wouldn't swallow his solids. We finally meet with an ENT and he explained that my son's tonsils and adenoids are very swollen. He prescribed nasonex to reduce the inflammation. The nasonex is only to be used for three weeks. From your experience does the swelling affect eating? From your experience would removal of adenoids and tonsils be more effective?

Brief Answer:
In this age better to go for conservative management

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I have gone through your query; and according to my best of knowledge I personally suggest you that your son go for the conservative management till the age of the three years if the condition is not severe.
Yes, tonsil and adenoid swelling causes difficulty in swallowing but first I prefer conservative management instead surgery, preferably in this age.
Conservative management include
1. Throat swab culture and antibiotic sensitivity and the antibiotic according to the test result.
2. Continue the nasonex nasal spray for further three months.
3. Use nasal decongestant for atleast five days two drops three times a day if not avoided.
4. Take fexofenadine syrup one tea spoon full once a day for atleast one month.
5. Avoid cold drinks, cold water, ice cream and any cold things if he have.

Before continue this conservative management, please consult with your doctor.

Thank you for your advice. We startrd the nasonex 4 days ago. We still don't see any difference in his behavior. They haven't said how long it will take until we see a difference. All we knownis to try it for three weeks and see the doctor 3 weeks after that. How long does it take to see a difference?
