What Causes Difficulty In Listening For High-pitched Sounds?

default
Posted on Mon, 26 Sep 2016
Question: When I hear a high-pitched sound (higher notes on a piano and organ or the steady beep of a house alarm when a door is opening), it sounds distorted (like uneven, not a steady beep). I thought it was my alarm, then I heard the same sound at my parents' house. I asked if anyone heard this, and everyone says it sounds normal. When I play the piano, when I get to the higher notes, it sounds like an old piano out of tune. I notice this when I play the organ, too.

Brief Answer:
Hearing damage

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

I am sorry to see that you are having problems with hearing high tones. This is common hearing loss and what is happening is that the ear is not able to actually hear and transmit the sound to your brain because the hearing cells have died. This normal as we get older. It is also possible that you may have a tumor or growth on the auditory nerve which will also distort sounds. To help diagnose the cause of your hearing problem I recommend that you see an ear doctor who can do in depth hearing testing and ear diagnosis. This will then possibly find a treatment that will return your hearing to where you are comfortable.
