What Causes Depressed Feelings, Feelings Of Being Victimised, Low Self Esteem And Irritation?

Question: Hello,

For a couple of months, I am feeling depressed and victimized. I have started getting self esteem issues and most of the time feel low. I don't even feel like involving in any physical activity like going to gym. My focus on work has also reduced.

Even any old thoughts start bothering me suddenly. The same thoughts will not bother me after a while.

If a person says something, I start taking it personally, and overthink, even though logically I know hurting me was not his intention. At times I feel I don't deserve happiness and should not do things that I like. I feel like a loser. I get offended easily and takes me hours or even days to get out of it.

Is this happening because I have not expressed my anger/irritation when I am supposed to? This has also started affecting my sleep and I do fresh in the morning at times.

I have seen some YouTube videos on self esteem and avoiding depression. They do help temporarily, but a permanent solution would be preferred,

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Medicines and Cognitive therapy are best treatment for depression

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. The depressed feelings, feelings of being victimised, low self esteem, reduced activity, taking things personally or rejection sensitivity, irritation etc are classical symptoms of depression. Some symptoms are features of atypical depression.

Videos on self esteem, relaxation etc can help but these are not definitive treatment of depression. For such symptoms you should visit a psychiatrist for help. If you doesn't want to take medicines then Cognitive Behaviour Therapy can help. But the therapy takes time to show recovery and multiple sessions are needed.

Medicines are good options in my opinion. SSRIs are newer antidepressants and are safe to use. These are not habit forming and help in recovery in 4-6 weeks only. Fluoxetine, Sertraline, Escitalopram etc are common SSRI medicines. These medicines will help to reduce your symptoms and you will feel better. As depression is a disorder that runs in episodes so in first episode the therapy will run for about 6-12 months depending upon response and you will definitely feel better. After completion of treatment the drugs can be tapered gradually. So visit a psychiatrist for evaluation and take proper treatment.

Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care
