What Causes Delayed Periods?

default
Posted on Sat, 10 May 2014
Question: hello doc , i am 52 days since last period ( LMP- feb 22,2014) . i had a long cycle once and after that my cycles were pretty much in the range of 32-36 days . But again i am back to long cycles .i did have unprotected intercourse around march 22-24 , noticed a little light blood red bleeding mixed with the discharge from vagina on 25 and 26 march, attributed to ovulation bleeding . now i am confused if it was ovulation bleeding or anything else .. i do not have any pregnancy symptoms or maybe i dont know how they may feel as i m a bit on the lighter side . for my satisfaction , did a HPT yesterday and got a negative . i did the test only because i felt extra tired when climbing stairs . i was almost on the point of fainting and feeling dizzy , could'nt go any further had to sit down for 5 mins to take breath .. pls note that i had just eaten and was climbing the gangway of a ship ( thought the dizziness mite be due to climbing immediately after eating heavily) . i do get tired everytime i get on the gangway but this was so alarming hence i had to test . kindly advise on the steps i can take to determine if i m pregnant or is it just my body thanks

Brief Answer: confirm with repeat upt and usg Detailed Answer: Hi XXXXXXX I am Dr Saumya MIttal. First, I dont think you are pregnant. Sexual activity is known to cause delay in the people sometimes. Pregnancy wont delay periods, unless you include the 9 months as delayed. A UPT is usually quite informative. However, as a more confirmatory test, I would suggest a usg lower abdomen. In relation to your other problem- fatigue etc, try checking vitamin D levels. they may help.

Brief Answer: About USG/UPT Detailed Answer: UPT is many times falsely negative. besides till a certain age (of the fetus) the upt may be negative. So thats why i recommend getting it repeated. As for usg. The usg can look in and actually tell if the fetus is there. It may also help diagnose ectopic pregnancy and other pregnancy mimics. Therefore i have suggested the two tests Best of luck Dr Mittal
