What Causes Delayed Periods After Taking Abortion Pills?

default
Posted on Mon, 29 Sep 2014
Question: Hello Doctor,

I am a mother of a 3 year old and I got pregnant recently for the second time. Myself and my husband decided to postpone the second child and hence I took Mifeprin kit as a measure of prevention.

May 28th was my last proper periods.

After which, I didnt get my periods during XXXXXXX In July I took the medicine. I got my periods soon after taking 2 misoprostol tablets (ie., before completion of kit) and hence I stopped the medicine. I got my periods on July July 30th.

Its already a month since my last periods and I havent got it yet.

I am afraid if this is any issue (like malformed foetus retaining in me) or can I wait for one or two days more for my periods.

P.S., I still have the remaining kit (2 misoprosol and 1 mifepristone). Can I administer it immediately or can I wait for a couple of days?

Also, I didnt take any medical examination after the intake of the dosage.

Please advice. I am much worried.Last month, On July 30th I got my periods and I had normal bleeding which lasted for about 5 days. There wasnt much pain however

Brief Answer:
Abortion pills always taken under supervision.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing to us.
First of all abortion pills should be taken under supervision of a doctor or an expert because chances of severe bleeding, infection and retained product of conception are always be there.
In your case advice from my side-
- Do not take remaining drugs
- Wait and watch for your period to come for 2-3 days
- If period not resume then go and consult a gynaecologist and get your pelvic ultrasound done to rule out retained product of conception.( you should always go for ultrasound after 10 days of abortion pills)
- The chances of retained products are less in your case because you had normal period in July.
Hope I have answered your query if you have further questions I will be happy to help you.
Good luck.
Regards
Dr. Richa

Thanks for the clarifications Doctor.

As per your advice, I would wait for 2 more days and consult a doctor in case of negative results.

By any chance, if you are located in TamilNadu, can you give me your contact address so that I could meet you in person for further treatments.

My husband has moved to Quatar on his job. I live with my in-laws and my daughter. I dont want my in-laws to know about the abortion.
As my husband is not near, I feel uneasy visiting a hospital alone for this.
I would be very happy if you can let me know any other ways. Something like, can I take the pills again or any other means of taking them. Last month I took it orally. Just wanted to know if there are any possibilities.
Hope you would understand my difficulty. Will be better if you can provide me a solution.
Please suggest me something that I could do from home.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Nice to see you again.

I can very much understand your problem but doctor consultation is important if possible. Before answering your queries I want to ask some questions-
- Did you have any contact after 30th July?
- Can you go for pelvic ultrasound?

Please revert back to me.
Waiting for your reply.
Good luck.
