What Causes Delay In Menstruation While On Marvelon?

default
Posted on Wed, 10 Feb 2016
Question: Hi Doctor,

I'm back again just out of worry and stress. I haven't got my periods yet and you had mentioned it will delayed as I had a high dosage of 'Marvelon' tablets. Just for your overview, my periods date is on XXXXXXX 11th. I had unprotected sex with my partner on XXXXXXX 4th, XXXXXXX 6th & XXXXXXX 11th. It was not completely unprotected sex as the ejaculation happened outside and most of it was done orally as well. I had consumed high dosage of ‘Marvelon’ tablets in two rounds of 4 tablets each. First round of 4 tablets was consumed on XXXXXXX 6th and then the next 4 tablets on XXXXXXX 8th. I’m concerned now as my periods hasn’t come yet. I get my periods regularly without any delay. But not this time and I'm concerned. Please advise.

Sorry for being a pain but your words comforts me a lot. I really don't want to get pregnant at this point of time.

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Stress also can delay your period.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.
Please do not think that you ever bother me.
I am most happy to respond to you always.
Please feel free to write in to me anytime dear.
Now for your question.
I totally understand your stress and anxiety.
Actually you have consumed very dosage of these hormonal tablets.
Totally 8 tablets.
It is natural to have some amount of alteration in your menses because of the effect of these pills.
What I suggest now is this -
Wait for one week more.
Refrain from sexual activity totally.
Take a pregnancy test if you do not bleed by next Thursday.
However, to reassure you, I think you will have your period before that time, as there is no chance of conception by having sex, even unprotected, around those dates, as you are not likely to be ovulating.
Just keep me posted.
I am sorry you were not able to reach me directly earlier.
Will again attach the link to my profile, just click on it, and the question comes to me directly and immediately.
Take care !
Relax, stress itself is likely to delay your period.

Thanks Doctor.

I tried contacting you directly but it so ended up that I consulted another doctor who said that its stress that causes delay and to relax. But to be honest I'm really stressed and worried as I have never been through such a delayed phase in my life ever. Thanks for the reassurance & I will keep you posted.

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear.
I understand that having missed your period by so many days, you are naturally anxious and stressed out.
Just try and relax if you can.
Wait for a week more, as I told you.
The symptoms you are having are quite common.
Do not worry about them.
They are non specific symptoms.
When was your last menstrual period ?
Generally in how many days do you have your next cycle ?

Last period was on Dec 10th or 11th. I always get on time. Maximum it comes one day early or one day late from the period date. To be honest i didnt have proper sex as ejaculation happened outside and it was done orally as well. The dates when i had was XXXXXXX 4th, 6th and 11th. Yet im worried and hence i took contraceptive pills. I trust your answer and I'm hoping I will get my periods soon.

Detailed Answer:
Even January 4th was the 24th day of your cycle.
It is virtually impossible to get pregnant with intercourse on those days.
I understand your stress however.
Can you try and forget about the matter for just one week ?
Let me know if you get your period in that time.
God bless you.

I trust you. Thanks Doctor.

I will update you once I get my periods.

In the meanwhile, is there a medicine or any natural method for periods to come? Please advise.

Have a great day.

Brief Answer:

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear.
There are no natural proven methods that can induce your period.
There are myths and quack practices such as oranges, papaya, vitamin C etc, but there is no scientific evidence that they work at all.
They might in fact cause more irregularities.
There are medications that can make your period come in early, but they are all hormone based, and you have all hormone based, and you have already consumed a very high dosage of hormones, so all those drugs might make matters worse.
I hope you understand.
Right now, the best option is to give your body some rest, and wait for natural periods to come.
I hope that is clear ?
Take care.
