Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I am sorry for the situation you are in. Now, let me understand a bit your situation:

1. You are reporting to have constipation problems that have settled after taking stool softeners.

Constipation is a common problem in patients of your age (78 yrs old) due to many factors. I advise to take plenty of water, psyllium supplement along stool softener to reduce the constipation problems.

Taking long walks can also help put your bowels into movement.

2. You are having awful stomach sounds that are embarrassing to you. That is partially attributed to the distended bowel due to constipation. Once you will have your constipation problems resolve, you won't have problems with gas neither.

3. You had an episode of throwing up dark coffee collar volume seven weeks ago.

If it was only an episode, it might be due to food indigestion/poisoning.

What puts me on thoughts is the color you mention as dark coffee, which might be suggestive of bleeding from stomach.
However, it was only an episode which was not repeated anymore.

4. You have started to smell and taste food in a horrible way.
Smelling and tasting food horribly is a temporary symptom of GI infection especially when it comes to viral infection.

However, you are mentioning that this has been going on for 7 weeks now, that should be further investigated through:
- upper endoscopy
- abdominal ultrasound
- culture of feces
- fecal occult blood

If nothing is noted with your GI tract, then, should consult with neurologist to rule out neurological issues.

Hope it was of help! Let me know if I can be of further help!
