What Causes Burning Sensation In Throat And Mouth Post Appendectomy?

Posted on Mon, 21 Sep 2015
Question: I had an appendectomy in November. It was gangrenous. I had a colonoscopy in January. Felt raw inside from the cleansing. I had a cat scan with iodine in March. I have had throat problems that started after appendectomy. My mouth, tongue & throat burn. I feel like my throat is swollen inside and have something stuck in it. During surgery I had two flaps of skin in my throat for a month that healed. What causes these problems and what do I do? I can't sleep more than 4 to 5 hours a night.

Brief Answer:
It seems that you have acid reflux

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

First of all, I would insist you not to panic. It seems that during or after your surgery, you started having gastroesophageal reflux. The reflux of stomach acids to your throat and mouth might be causing the swollen and burning sensation with the sense of obstruction. In such a case, you need to do the following:
* Take omeprazole once daily before breakfast.
* Take small but frequent meals. Avoid big meals or long intervals between meals.
* Regular exercise and morning walk is essential.
* Do not lie down soon after feeding.

Let me assure that 4-5 hours of sleep is reasonable to have and you need not worry if have it. Relaxation and avoidance of stress is key to good sleep. Regular exercise can help you get a good sleep.

Stay relaxed.

Was there damage done during surgery that will heal or will I have this the rest of my life? Will the acid medication harm my liver?

Brief Answer:
Do not worry. It should gradually be fine.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. It is not due to any damage done during surgery. Rather, it might have occurred due to the stress during such a situation. It is unlikely to be there for the rest of your life and should respond to treatment. These medications are unlikely to harm your liver.
