What Causes Brown Stools With Gas?

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Jun 2014
Question: Hi I am 41 old female and my problem is that I have to go to the toilet about 15 times a day. Normally if I go it is only a load wet fart with loads of brown mucas. Really embarissing. Sometimes small poos aswell. It is getting worse and is leaking out of my bottom now. Did go to dr and she says ibs but is it normal that it is so many times and that is leaking out. Sometimes my stomack burns terribly and is sore about all the time. The mucas is a brown colour. My daughter of 4 also got severe stomack pains she gets pale and after she laid down a bit she feels better. There is not a day that go pass that she is not complaining about stomack pains. Now that I started aswell I know what she is going through. Dr's don't know what it can be. We both had stool tests but they couldn't find anything wrong. Can it be parasites. Don't know where to go to get answers.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about these numerous stools that you have reported in a day. For how long have you been having this. Has it always been like this or there are days where you feel a lot better?

I will suggest that you get a repeat stool exam and culture. The fact that you both have this condition makes the suspicion of an infection more likely. If the duration of these symptoms has been more than 14days, please ask your doctor to provide medications that can at least reduce how often you visit the toilet for this.

Could this be IBS? Yes but it doesn't imply that there is no treatment for this condition. At least your doctor can provide with medications to control the bothersome symptoms.

In all, get a stool exam and culture. Also, get some medications to reduce the frequency of stools like loperamide/smecta etc. This will help control the incontinence that you have reported. And have you considered being reviewed by a Gastroenterologist?

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarification if need be.
