Brief Answer:
Hemorrhoids are most probable reason.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Blood on the surface of the stool and on the toilet paper is usually caused by hemorrhoids. Such blood is usually bright red and is never mixed with the stool. Itching around the anus and clear discharge can be present with this issue.
Hemorrhoids are enlarged veins of rectal area. The main factors of this condition are constipation, pushing hard on stool, lifting heavy objects or even pregnancy.
Once the hemorrhoids appear, can not vanish without surgical procedure. But it is possible to improve theirs condition and make symptoms go away for some time.
As you are almost 50, and the risk of colon cancer significantly rises over this age, I suggest you to have your first colonoscopy. This is necessary to make sure nothing else is there (rectal cancer can in some cases give similar to hemorrhoids bleeding). If you dont feel like heaving this test, please at least consult proctologist and have rectal examination.

To improve hemorrhoids condition please follow this steps:
- increase fiber intake
- do not push hard on stool
- wash your rectum after every stool
- avoid fatty foods
- use OTC suppositories for hemorrhoids
- have sitz baths with Oak Bark

If this wont help in a week or so, you should consult general surgeon or proctologist and consider surgical procedure.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
