What Causes Blood In Stool After A Gall Bladder Surgery?

default
Posted on Sat, 2 Apr 2016
Question: I had my gullbladder removed XXXXXXX 25th 2016
Today I had a bowel movement. I noticed some what appears to be blood on the paper. I was not a puddle of blood or anything but noticible. I have had only minor pain after the operation and now still only just a 1 on a pain scale and only if pressure is applied to the location of my stomach. I have been using a bit of chloraseptic cheery for the pain in my mouth and throat. Could it be the red XXXXXXX coming through and not blood?

Hello and welcome,

I am assuming what you saw on the paper was bright red.

Red XXXXXXX can definitely come out in the stool, but it is usually mixed in with the stool then (coloring the stool) rather than appearing separately on the paper. So I think this is less likely.

If the BM was hard or difficult to pass, the anus/rectum can get a small tear and that would cause a small amount of bright red blood when you wipe. Sometimes after surgery there can be some constipation and a hard movement. Was this the case?

Hemorroids can also cause a bit of bleeding but you would probably have other symptoms where you knew you had hemorroids such as itching or irritation.

There are other more concerning causes too, but if this is only happening today and possibly a bit tomorrow, it is more likely a local irritation or injury rather than something serious. If you have it again later though, then do go in to see your doctor for further evaluation.
