What Causes Blood In Semen?

default
Posted on Wed, 18 May 2016
Question: During sex with my partner last night while stroking his cock his precum/seminal fluid had bright red blood in it. We practice tease and denial so it's not uncommon for him to have a lot of pre-cum or prostate fluid prior to ejaculation. This is the first time we've ever encountered blood coming out of his penis. It was not present in his urine, nor in his semen upon ejaculation a bit later. We also noticed that one side of the head of his penis was red and swollen- and over night that became more noticeable - awaking with a sensitive and slightly reddened area near the tip of his penis. He is 62 and in good health. We practice prostate stimulation in our sexual relationship- but there had been nothing inside of him stimulating or possibly irritating his prostrate for several days. So the fresh blood is confusing- along with the swelling and painful penis tip. We will schedule a doctor's appointment but was curious as to whether this is common and for what reason. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Hemospermia

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You are concerned about blood in your partners semen. This is called hemospermia. It is a benign condition and frequently associated with prostate trauma or infection. In rare cases it can also be seen with prostate cancer. I think it is a good idea for him to be seen to rule out the cancer of the prostate issue. In all likelihood the blood is from prostate stimulation during sex.

The burning and painful penis tip could be a sign of urinary tract infection or chlamydia infection. Your medical provider will check these conditions during his visit.

In summary
1. Hemospermia
2. Prostate infection vs trauma
3. Rare Prostate cancer
4. UTI vs Chlamydia infection for penis pain
