Posted on Tue, 3 Feb 2015
Question: I have a black line on the roof of my mouth. My dentist discovered it today but he wasn't sure what it is. It's raised a bit. Very thin. Like a ridge. Can u help me with this? Do you know what it may be?

Brief Answer:
Kindly provide pictures and details

Detailed Answer:
Hi

I understand your concern regarding your skin problem and I hope I am able to help you in the same.
Pigmentation in the roof of mouth can occur due to various reasons. Most of the reasons for pigmentation are benign and harmless but we shortly need to rule out chronic skin conditions specially autoimmune ones.
I would like to know if there is any associated pain or discomfort.
Are you currently on any oral medications.
Also if possible I would like to have a look at the exact skin condition.
Please click some close up pictures of the affected area and upload them here on this page .

I am sure I will be able to help you better once you provide me the pictures along with the above details.

Brief Answer:
Black area just a healing line, need not worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

Thanks for the pictures.
The black area over the palate seems to have developed secondary to some trauma to the area.
Any kind of minor irritation or trauma to the oral mucosa can occur on eating hot food leading to minor mucosal burns which are not immediately apparent to the person .
So the lesion is basically healing right now, leading to blackish pigmentation.
I can also appreciate redness and swelling over the adjoining area of the palate.
that surely seems like an area of concern.
I would like to know if you have anything in the red inflamed area.
Also kindly palpate The area with your index finger to see how does it feel.
Is it soft or firm in consistency ?
Any pain?
I would require the above information to differentiate between an inflamed area or a mucosal cyst .
