Black coloured stool may be due to iron supplements or anticoagulants if he is taking or it could be due to some bleed in bowel.

I would suggest you to consult your doctor and get the feces examined for blood. If it is present then you need to further investigate to know the cause. You may be adviced for colonoscopy.
