Brief Answer:
Possible gastritis pain. Need to rule out pancreatitis

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Burning pain in mid chest radiating to back could possibly be gastritis. Gastritis is acid-induced inflammation of stomach lining.

Avoid fatty, fried and spicy foods. Avoid chocolate, carbonated drinks, citrus fruits and juices and caffeine.

Eat small frequent meals large than 3 larger meals. Some people also benefit from limiting dairy and using low-fat dairy. He can also take pantoprazole.

However, another major concern with his description of pain is possible pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). If the pain persists after 48 hours or seems to be worsening even after following the above recommendations, please follow with his primary provider to undergo Serum Amylase and Serum Lipase screening test to rule out pancreatitis.

Sunburn-like burning pain can also be due to superficial problems on the skin like shingles. However, since this has been going on for 7 days and he has not yet developed a rash, skin issues are highly unlikely. But keep a close watch on any skin changes like redness, irritation, blistering, itching etc. at the area of pain.

Hope I have answered your query.
