What Causes An Increase In PSA Levels?

default
Posted on Wed, 18 Jan 2017
Question: My PSA Level jumped from 6 to 11 in three months. Urologist said he's never seen anything like it. Prostate biopsy several months earlier was negative and so was a DRE. He detected a prostate infection when the level was 6 in October and I took trimethoprim until December 24 (Got the PSA test on December 23). It was that last test that showed a level of 11. Have never had any symptoms of what might be expected for any prostate problems. The infection now seems to have been eliminated. He now wants me to have an MRI. I had a food poisoning episode during the first week in December and am wondering if that could have elevated the PSA.

Brief Answer:
Go for the MRI. It is important.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

A rise in PSA from 6 to 11 cannot be attributed to some infection. Rather, a cancer with distal spread needs to be ruled out. Your doctor has rightly advised for an MRI. Thereafter he might also advise you for a bone scan.

The episode of food poisoning does not seem to have any correlation with this.
