What Causes Amnesia And Heart Palpitations After Having Beer?

default
Posted on Mon, 1 Dec 2014
Question: Hi Doctor,

I was given a beer sample at an event last month by a woman who initially came across as friendly, but then repeatedly tried to set me up with a prostitute. I immediately had 8 hours of amnesia, although I had very little alcohol, and then symptoms including heart palpitations, GI problems, insomnia, nausea and vertigo for 5-6 days. It has been a month and I am still experiencing vertigo.

I am currently seeing a neurologist who has prescribed me Meclizine and running neurological tests. I would like to get a second opinion as to the cause of this if you have any idea what it may be.

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the query,

This could be any of a number of things. Its possible there was a substance in the beer sample that triggered the amnesia. This would be difficult to prove however. These substances usually do not have a lasting effect other than the temporary amnesia - I agree that seeing a neurologist is reasonable and hopefully he can give you some additional guidance.

The meclizine may help some of the dizziness. I would also focus on good fluid hydration, abstain from alcohol and inquire from the woman regarding the source of the beer. If you are concerned that you were given a tainted drink you may need to involve the authorities to perform an investigation.

Sincerely,

Dr. Galamaga
