What Causes Allergic Reactions To Orthovisc Injection?

default
Posted on Wed, 6 May 2015
Question: I had an injection of orthovisc in my right knee on April 1. I had a reaction to the injection; didn't feel well for almost 2 weeks and felt very tired. I'm due to have another injection tomorrow. I don't know if I should have this 2nd injection due to the intolerance I had with the 1st injection. There are 3 in the series. I have a meniscus tear in my right knee and I do have pain in my knee. My rheumatologist believes this helps. I have not sought the help of an orthopedist. Can you give me some advice?

Brief Answer:
In my opinion you can take it.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Madam,

Thank you for posting your query on HCM.

Well looking into your problem I would like to tell you that Orthovisc contains hyaluron and many people get allergic reactions to this compound so in case you had one allergic reaction you should avoid it but you report fatigue only which is quite common with this compound and does not require discontinuation .

I believe that your treating doctor is giving the same for osteoarthritis knees , it has got a mild efficacy in that according to some studies but since you has problem with it one time , next time time if you take it , it might be little more aggravated so just be in your doctors supervision. Other thing you can do is to take intraarticular cortisone injection in the knee , most patient report significant relief with that .

But if your treating doctor feels, you should go for orthovisc injection as the major contraindication for repeating it will be allergic reaction to it . Since you report only fatigue as the side effect you can go for it but be careful and report to your doctor if you develop rash; hives; difficulty breathing etc .

Take care.

Dr. Shruti
