What Causes Abdominal Groans?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Nov 2014
Question: What does it mean when every afternoon around 3 pm my stomach/intestines begin to "moan"? Sometimes it is gas, but other times it does not get that far. It does not seem to matter what I had for lunch. It's been going on for several months, and that is the only symptom. By evening I feel better, the next morning I am fine, then it starts again mid-afternoon. It started out every once in a while, but it's been every day for the past few weeks now.

Brief Answer:
Medications and dietary precautions will help.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing your query. After reading your post, it seems that your symptoms can be due to gastritis. I would advise that you should take an antacid like Omeprazole 40mg once a day before meals along with Domperidone 30mg for relief from your symptoms. A probiotic along with digestive enzyme preparation containing pepsin and fungal diastase after meals will have added benefits.
Following precautions will be helpful :-
1.Avoid spicy and oily foods.
2.Avoid being empty stomach for long periods.
3.Avoid mental and emotional stress.
4.Avoid smoking and alcohol, if any.
5.Avoid self medications, especially pain killers and steroids.
6.Drink lots of water daily.
7.Eat light meals prepared under hygienic conditions.
8.Avoid gas producing foods like peas, cabbage, legumes, etc.
9.Avoid eating fast and talking while eating.
If the symptoms persists, get yourself clinically examined and investigated by a Gastroentologist.
I hope this is helpful to you. If you have any further query, I will be happy to help.
Regards. Thanks.

I have a followup question to a question I asked last week.

My question was what to do about when my stomach seems to react to lunch everyday by starting to "moan" around 3pm every afternoon. It does not matter what I had for lunch. By the next morning, I am fine. I have tried Gas-X but it did not seem to help at all.

The doctor last week suggested anti-acids and a probiotic. I checked the grocery today and they don't sell the anti-acids in a large enough daily dosage as the doctor recommended, and I could not find a probiotic that contained pepsin.

My question now - if this has been going on for several months, do I need a stronger remedy than this? One of the antacids said that after 14 days, that you would need to see a doctor if you still have the symptoms.

Detailed answer is given below.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for providing more information.
I would like to clear your doubts. Pepsin is not present in the probiotic. It is present in the digestive enzyme preparation along with fungal diastase. You may go through my answer again. A probiotic contains spores of Lactobacillus group of useful bacteria.
Antacid Omeprazole is an OTC ( Over The Counter) medicine and is easily available. You may continue the medications for about 2 weeks and if the symptoms persists, you should consult a Gastroentologist for further clinical evaluation.
I hope this answers your query. If you have any further doubts, please mention.
Regards. Thanks.
