What Causes A Residual Lump At The Site Of Injury?

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Jan 2017
Question: I was just riding my bike, had a near fall during which I hit my right lower leg with part of the bike. Didn't bother me, but upon return noticed a scratch, but also a raised lump, which is sore. Lump is about 1" by 1.5" in size and is at the site of the scratch. It is sore and moves slightly when I push it from the side. Is it just a bruise, or is it coincidental being at the site of the scratch, and is something more serious?

Brief Answer:
can occur in response to trauma

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Swelling or the formation of lesions is common at the site of trauma.

It occurs as part of the body's inflammatory response. Trauma essentially causes the release of certain chemicals in the body at the site of injury that cause swelling or 'lumps' to occur.

Usually they resolve, though it may not be complete in some cases. Some persons may have a residual lump at the site of an injury for a long period of time, this is because scar tissue sets in.

You can consider the use of an ice compress to the area along with anti inflammatory medications-NSAIDS (ibuprofen, voltaren or naproxen).
The ice compress should be used 2 to 3 times daily for 15 to 20 mins.
