Posted on Thu, 4 Sep 2014
Question: I am having a lot of pain in my right knee. There is a lot swelling on the back of my knee and also a bump that looks to be filled with fluid on the side of my knee. I have pain all the time even when resting but it becomes much worse after walking or doing any activity. I did have orthoscopic surgery to repair a torn miniscus and disintegrating cartilage in my knee five years ago. What could be causing this pain?

Brief Answer:
Seems to be bakers cyst.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for your query.

Without a complete evaluation I may not be able to confirm the exact cause .It is possible that you have been suffering from Bakers cyst. A Baker cyst is swelling caused by fluid from the knee joint which may have protruded to the back of the knee.Osteoarthritis, cartilage tears, rheumatoid arthritis any of these conditions can lead to the formation of this cyst.

For baker's cyst you have to follow principle of R.I.C.E. Rest your leg. Ice the inflamed area. Compress your knee with a wrap, sleeve or brace. And elevate your leg when possible, especially at night.

Gentle range-of-motion and strengthening exercises for the muscles around your knee also may help to reduce your symptoms and preserve knee function.

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.

Take care
