What Are The Signs And Symptoms Of Autoimmune Hepatitis And Lupus?

default
Posted on Thu, 20 Apr 2017
Question: My anti smooth muscle antibody came back 3 points over normal (22) range 0-19. They are testing me for "autoimmune diseases". This scares me. I'm assuming autoimmune hepatitis and lupus but what other diseases? Should I be worried if it's 3 points above normal? I have fatty liver and recent imaging that shows no inflammation/hepatitis.

Brief Answer:
No autoimmune hepatitis

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I can understand your concern for your lab values.
1) It is unlikely to have autoimmune hepatitis without any evidence of hepatitis on USG abdomen.
2) Generally, autoimmune hepatitis would cause abnormal liver function test. Normal LFT result also indirectly rule out hepatitis.
3) You can not be diagnosed to have lupus based on only anti-smooth muscle antibody test. There are some other tests to confirm this condition along with anti-smooth muscle antibody.
4) Based on your short history , absent of findings on USG abdomen about hepatitis and weakly positive anti-smooth muscle antibody test can not confirm autoimmune hepatitis.

Hope I answered your query. If you have any further doubt, I would be happy to help you.
Have a nice day!
