What Are The Side Effects Of Lexapro, Keppra And Zyprexa?

default
Posted on Sat, 9 May 2015
Question: I am on Lexapro 40 mg, Keppra 1500 mg, Zyprexa 5 mg and Klonopin 2 mg for anxiety and a OCD symptom created before by Solian 100 mg. I feel better (i am taking Zyprexa since two weeks and a half), but, since i am mild metabolizer for cyp2c19 (allele 2), i would like to know if Klonopin side effects can create also some phobia or OCD like (even if it's not exactly that) symptoms, or maybe because Klonopin decreases the utilization of 5ht in neurones (as far as i know), so maybe i should take for example 1 mg to feel better and help Zyprexa to work. I think it's very important for me to know, because i have always problems with Klonopin and in the morning i take a too strong dosage of coffee to low Klonopin.
Thanks, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Your question is valid

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for writing through HCM.

I have read your query and understood your concerns.

As you know klonopin is a benzodiazepine drug which acts through GABA receptors and increases the activity of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA. This is the primary action for which it has been used as a anxiolytic drug.. It has also been studied that it has some antimanic properties, so it is usually used along with mood stabilizers in Bipolar mania. Studies have also shown that it decreases the serotonin available in the synapse by up-regulation of the serotonin transporters which moves serotonin out of the synapse and finally, because the decrease availability of serotonin, there is increase in the number of 5 HT1 and 5HT 2 receptors in brain mostly in frontal cortex.

The psychopathology of Social anxiety, depression and OCD, all have been linked to decrease availability of serotonin. So, by decreasing the available serotonin in the synapse klonopin can increase the depression [it has been written in various studies but result are conflicting and not consistent]. There are no studies regarding effects of klonopin of Social anxiety and OCD, but when you think logically in accordance with klonopin and serotonin receptor interaction, klonopin can possibly worsen OCD and anxiety.

I feel that in low dose it may not affect the serotonin level, so low dose like 0.5 to 1 mg can be used to help zyprexa. All the studies who have shown the interaction between clonazepam and serotonin uptake, have used 2 to 8 mg/day dose of clonazepam.

Hope I have answered your query. If you do not have further query then close the discussion and rate the answer.
