What Are The Risks Of HIV Transmission Through Genital Warts?

default
Posted on Mon, 24 Aug 2015
Question: Hi,

I am a male and earlier this month I had unprotected sex with an asian escort. Since then, I have had a PCR test done. I am currently waiting results.

I understand that according to the CDC, the probability of infection from woman to man in my case (anal, vaginal) is 15/10,000 which equates to a 0.15% chance of infection.

However, I did some reading online about the different STDs out there and I'm pretty sure I may have HSV-1. A couple years ago, I remember getting a cold sore after a night of partying. I'm not sure if I have ever had HSV-2. I understand that the likelihood of transmission of HIV is increased if I have genital warts.

If hypothetically, I have HSV-2 but no sign of any symptoms (genital warts), is the CDC statistic still applicable to me? If not, how does it change my odds?

Thanks,
XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
If you have no active sore, teh CDC statistics do not apply to you!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this unprotected sex and all the inconveniences this has caused you. I have reviewed your information fully. Please, HSV only increases your risk if you have active sores. If you don't, do not bother about this. From what you have reported, it seems you have no active sore and this your probability remains at 0.15%. However, this holds true if the other partner is HIV positive and am sure this is not certain. Therefore, your chances are 0.15% if she is HIV positive and even lower if that isn't the case.

However, please, please, please, always endeavor to protect yourself during all sexual encounter especially when you are not sure of the partners status.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

Hi Dr. Ivo Ditah,

Thank you for the quick response. When I read the article about the connection between HSV2 and HIV, I was totally freaking out. I feel a bit more calm now with your reassurance. And I will definitely definitely always use a condom in the future.

I do have a follow up comment/question:

The escort that I had sex with was Chinese. It seems as though she just arrived to the states when we had sex. I researched HIV statistics in China and found that HIV exists in less than 0.1% of the population (http://www.avert.org/hiv-aids-china.htm)

If that is the case, then I would have to be extremely extremely unlucky on not one but TWO accounts in order to actually be infected with HIV.

1st case) CDC statistic of 15/10,000
2nd case) 0.1% of chinese with HIV

Therefore the statistical probability of contracting HIV from this woman is...not "Impossible" per se, but extremely extremely unlikely.

I guess what I'm trying to ask is, If you were me, would you be having anxiety attacks like I have been suffering through this whole week? Or would you just feel pretty relaxed?

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I understand your concerns. With these statistics, your probability is actually 0.15%*0.1%. This is certainly very low but not impossible. My feeling is that you may actually go free this time but know that you may not always be very lucky all the times.

Best wishes and take care!
