What Are The Repercussions Of Missing One Day's Microgynon-30 Course?

Posted on Mon, 27 Apr 2015
Question: Hi,

I've been using Microgynon 30 ED for 5 years. I recently started my new pack of Microgynon one day late, was meant to start on monday but forgot to so started on Tuesday and doubled up. This is the first time it has happened and i finished the last pack correctly.

Am i stil protected when having sex the following week? I had intercourse on Friday so 3 days after taking the 'missed pill' and was concerend i may not be fully protected?

Thanks,
XXXXXXX

Hi XXXXXXX

I understand your concerns.

If you missed only one dosage of Microgynon 30 ED, and took the pill within 12 hours, and continued taking the pills regularly, then, you are protected from pregnancy. I do not think you need to go for plan b.

But, if you took the next pill in more than 12 hours, and had unprotected sex the next 7 days, it is recommended to go for non-hormonal contraception methods like condoms or spermicides.

As you had sex the 3rd day after missing pill, and not around your ovulation days, then, no worries. But, if that day was around your ovulation period, I advise to take pregnancy test 2 weeks after your due date if missing period!

Hope it cleared your doubt!

Thanks for the reply.

I usually would have started the new pack at 8am Monday morning but started the new pack instead at 8 on Tuesday and doubles up.

Would the pill have totally lost its effectiveness or would this just have been reduced by the time I had sex? Just wanted to check as I've been reading very contradictory things online. With some saying starting the pack a day late wouldn't be a problem at alland others saying otherwise!

Thanks XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Missing one day won't be a problem unless it was around your ovulation...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back XXXXXXX

Being only one day late will still cover your hormonal changes; so, won't be a problem. I still think that if, at the time you had sex, it was not your ovulation period, then, you are still protected.
There is another discussion if the day when you had sex was around your ovulation period. That's why I advised to had the test 2 weeks after due date.

To clear your doubt, one day won't be a problem unless, it is around your ovulation period.

All the best!
